Modelling the Organisational Impact of Ambulatory Care

In a drive for greater throughput off electric elective patients a number of
Acute Trusts are proposing Ambulatory Care facilities (now often referred to
as diagnostic and treatment centres). These are essentially walk-in walk-out
centres which undertake routine elective treatment. Currently there is only
one such facility in operation in the UK, at the Central Middlesex Hospital
though a number of similar facilities are being planned throughout the
country.
A study has been undertaken in collaboration with Aberdeen Royal Infirmary
to understand the throughput of patients through such a planned Ambulatory
Care facility. The study has also investigated the consequences for
inpatient facilities of the separation of the routine patients for treatment
in the Ambulatory Care centre. Computer simulation has been used extensively
to understand the flow of patients through the facility and the resource
constraints. A number of alternative designs of Ambulatory Care have been
evaluated and computer simulation has been found to be a useful means of
comparing patient throughput and resource requirements.
