I agree in part with Lindsay that it can be problematic so effective project
management is essential. I have heard some real horror stories but
generally I think, if managed well, OH software packages are a superb
resource to have.
I think that the keyword you have mentioned is "cheap". I would suggest
that if you cannot afford to do it properly, don't do it at all, otherwise
you will end up running two systems - a software system for part of your
work and a paper system for the part that you could not afford to
computerise.
As for systems there are quite a few out there. Any edition of Occupational
Health will have a whole host on offer. Having used several of the systems
my personal preference is OHSYS. As Lindsay says though .... get the reps
in.
One thing that you might find useful if to ask the company for references -
other companies that are using their system. With any luck you could then
visit one of those companies to see how they are operating it, the problems
and successes that they have had.
