Epidemiology for decision makers - 13, 14, 15 November 2002.
A course for scientific and administrative staff who need to undertake critical evaluation of scientific literature to inform policy making.
The course will consist of a mixture of lecturers, seminars and discussions. Case studies and literature from the fields of environmental, occupational and public health will be used to illustrate topics. The course will include an overview of the design, analysis and interpretation of results from studies utilising different epidemiological designs, such as intervention, case-control, cohort and ecological studies. The advantages and disadvantages of these different designs will be discussed, together with aspects of bias and confounding. An introduction to systematic review and meta-analysis will be given, together with an evaluation of the contribution of epidemiological studies to the risk assessment process.
