Dear Joan,
I would agree with Chris's notes regarding machine shop oil droplets.
With regard to your sales team entering theatre, I guess the question should
relate to the exposure that they face. If they are potentially likely to
come into contact with body fluids regularly then they should receive a Hep
B course. If they are just observing in theatre though Hep B should not be
required.
They should still have all the standard vaccinations though - tetanus, polio
etc.
With regard to audiometry I do not think that there is any legislative
requirement relating to frequency of audiometry. Clearly though Reg 5 of
the Management of Health & Safety at Work Regs makes health surveillance,
including audiometry, mandatory.
The Noise at Work Regs 1990 of course outline the requirements for workers
subjected to noise. A useful sheet to get would be the HSE Guidance Note MS
26 "A guide to audiometric testing programmes" (1995).
With regard to frequency I think that there are different practices. I like
to do it annually. Some people suggest though that this is not necessary,
that annual checks for the first two years of exposure, to ensure the
employee is wearing protection effectively and is comfortable in their use,
followed by surveillance every 3 years is sufficient.
If you identify an employee with hearing loss the first question you need to
ask is what is causing this hearing loss. Is the level of hearing
protection sufficient? If the hearing protection is appropriate, is the
employee wearing it correctly or in fact wearing it at all?
I hope that this is of some use.
Best wishes,
Stu.
