QUANTUM DYNAMICAL CONCEPTS: FROM DIATOMICS TO BIOMOLECULES

Recent spectacular advances in the technology of ultrashort laser pulses
have motivated the development of novel time-dependent methods for the
description of quantum dynamics of complex systems. Ultrafast molecular
processes are nowadays not only routinely investigated but also actively
controlled (e.g., optimization of quantum yields of the desired products via
shaping of the laser pulses). Moreover, the present boom of high resolution
spectroscopic experiments (e.g., on molecules embedded in ultracold helium
droplets) calls for accurate quantum dynamical methods. These experimental
techniques are applicable to various systems ranging from simple diatomics
to complex biomolecules. Thus, there is a need both for very accurate but
computationally extremely demanding numerical methods applicable to the
simple systems, as well as approximate, numerically feasible schemes for the
complex systems.
A central workshop with all the key speakers present will be surrounded by a
seminar which is structured into four focused weeks with the topics:
Time-dependent Semiclassical Methods (April 2 - 5, 2002), Non-Adiabatic
Dynamics (April 8 - 12, 2002), Laser Control of Chemical Reactions (April 22
- 26, 2002) and Quantal Aspects in the Dynamics of Clusters and Biomolecules
(April 29 - May 3, 2002).
