The Lonsdale Vale Iron Co. was active from about 1864 until the early 1870's
in sinking a shaft to work Cleveland ironstone and failing to achieve it.
See "Cleveland Industrial Archaeologist No. 15" of 1983 (ISSN 0306-3259) pp.
31-48 for a detailed description of the site at NZ 615105 and a history by
the late John Owen. At the site is an open shaft with the remains of a house
for a Cornish engine; one of the very few used in Cleveland.
A short description appears in "Catalogue of Cleveland Ironstone Mines"
published by Peter Tuffs in recent years. See his website.
Simon Chapman.
