I append a description of a conference held last month. It seems a
pity that the conference was not publicised on this list before it
took place. If anyone knows the organisers, perhaps we may hope to
receive notice of the publication of the Proceedings.

All, I thought you might like to know about an excellent day seminar in
Lausanne organised by Christof Teuscher at the Ecole Polytechnique
Federal de Lausanne on Friday 28th June. It was headed the Turing Day
and covered various aspects of Turing's life. Martin Davis discussed the
Church-Turing thesis, I talked about his work at Bletchley Park, Jack
Copeland covered the Turing test and his involvement with AI. Jonathan
Swinton described his work on Fibonacci Phyllotaxes, Douglas Hofstadter
mused on the strange loop from Epimenides to Turing and Crick and
Watson, Christof Teuscher described Connectionism, Turing and the Brain,
Gianluca Tempesti described a Bio-Inspired implementation of a Turing
Machine and Andrew Hodges rounded off with thoughts about what Turing
might have done. All in all a remarkable day enjoyed by over 200
delegates. It is hoped that the proceedings will be published.
regards--
Tony Sale
