Dear Colleagues,
A volunteer-run museum in Surrey is looking at using a computerised
collections management system for the first time. They have the best
documented collection in the county - all on mda cards - so this is a big
step for them.
They've done the on-line CHIN training, and come up with a question:
they are concerned about the inevitable need, at some point in the future,
to migrate the data onto a new system, and would like to know if this has
ever been done successfully by a small museum? By 'a small museum' I mean
one without professional ICT staff or registrar or documentation
specialist. Was this done in-house, or was outside expertise needed?
The majority of small museums have, I think, got with a system such as
MODES, and stuck with it through upgrades rather than migrating to new
systems. So the answer might be for them to only purchase a system with a
large number of users and a long track record of supporting small museums.
Best wishes to all,
Pat
