Apologies for cross posting
Resource has recently announced the Sharing Skills Scheme 2002 - 2003
consisting of nine secondments for professional development for individuals
working in museums, archives and libraries.
The St Paul's Cathedral Inventory Project has registered with Resource as a
host institution. The Inventory Project is being undertaken in compliance
with the Care of Cathedrals Measure (1990) and directions issued by the
Cathedrals Fabric Commission for England.
The inventory scope encompasses all items in possession of the Dean and
Chapter considered to be of archaeological, architectural, artistic or
historic interest. The project is cross-domain and for management and
recording purposes is divided into objects, bibliographic items and
archival collections. The scope is wide-ranging and embraces movable and
fixed items including architectural and archaeological materials, books and
manuscripts, drawings, furniture, monuments, mosaics, musical instruments,
paintings, prints and vestments.
The object inventory is approximately 80% complete and will describe
approximately 4000 items on completion. Work is scheduled to commence on
the Library collection and archival holdings. The Library collection
consists of an estimated 24,000 bibliographic items. It is a rare book
collection including printed and manuscript books, printed and manuscript
music scores and a large collection of tracts and sermons. The archival
holdings include the Dean and Chapter Archive and a comprehensive Fabric
Archive.
Where possible bibliographic records will be sourced from online services
and edited to incorporate copy specific details. Original cataloguing will
be undertaken for unmatched items and the manuscripts collection.
Collection Level Descriptions will be applied to all previously
undocumented collections or groups of items in accordance with best
practice guidelines.
Expressions of interest would be especially welcomed from applicants with
knowledge and experience in manuscript, rare book, music (sheet and score)
cataloguing and archival description. In addition there is scope for
terminology work, particularly in relation to the object data.
