In Worcestershire libraries we do not have a uniform, although we have
discussed it and rejected it for a number of reasons, mainly cost. However,
we also cooperate with District Council to provide One-Stop Shops and all
staff there wear a uniform with logos of the two councils embroidered on.
We have talked about a dress code, but got nowhere because of difficulty of
drafting one that works and enjoys confidence of staff. BMA's library
assistant sounds interesting!

We don't have a uniform, although less than 20 years ago library
staff were
required to wear white lab coats while on duty. Nor do we have a
dress
code other than no sandals or high heels (for safety reasons) and no
leaving the naughty bits uncovered (a rule introduced in response to
a
library assistant with more style than most. Oh, and no Arsenal or
Tottenham shirts, purely on grounds of taste and decency.

We, in Brent, believe we are one of only a few library services
whose front
line staff wear a uniform.
We are currently reviewing this on cost grounds, and because of the
time it
takes to manage. We are interested to hear what experiences others
have had
of uniforms, or whether you apply a dress code.
Thank you
