CILIP CHARTERED MEMBERSHIP
In reply to the message posted to this list on 6th August, we felt that it
was necessary to respond in order to correct some of the misinformation
which it contained.
There are only two levels of Chartered Membership available to CILIP
members: Chartered Member (MCLIP) and Chartered Fellow (FCLIP). Absolutely
no distinction is made between Chartered Members who gained their MCLIP
through the IIS or LA route. The concept of "second-class" simply does not
exist. The apparent anomaly detected by the correspondent was due to an
administrative error in an individual record which has now been corrected
and we apologise to the member for that error.
The new organisation has retained areas of best practice from both of its
predecessors and has, consequently, made changes to its membership
structure. This has led to some levels of misunderstanding which we have
taken steps to deal with as we encounter them. Whereas the old LA
designation "Associate Member" indicated a member who had gained Chartered
Membership, the new category of "Associate Member" is equivalent to the old
category of "Ordinary Member", i.e. a member who is in a position to go
forward for Chartered Membership but who has not yet applied to do so. This
particular change is causing some interpretation difficulties hence the
clarification in UPDATE.
We are, of course, fully aware that there are large numbers of highly
experienced information professionals in the sector who are, currently,
unable to progress through to Chartered Membership and whose considerable
contribution and value to the profession cannot currently be accredited. We
are now embarked on a research and consultation exercise which will
culminate in the publication of a draft new Framework of Qualifications
which, it is hoped, will enable library and information workers at all
levels to engage with us in putting in place a system which will take us all
forward together. We would encourage all members to respond to the
Framework when it is sent out for consultation. We really need to hear from
you so don't delay in responding when you receive your documents.
The staff in the Membership, Careers and Qualifications Department are
always happy to discuss any individual questions or concerns with members.
