LEGAL AND ARTS INFORMATION PROFESSIONALS VIE FOR PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT AWARD
Finalists receive free places at Online Information 2003
Jas Sembhi, senior information officer at leading London law firm D J Freeman, is the winner of the CILIP/Online Information Personal Development Award 2002. She received Amazon vouchers worth £250 from CILIP's President Sheila Corrall at the Online Information 2002 Gala Awards Dinner at the Royal Garden Hotel, Kensington, on Wednesday 4th December - plus a free place at the 2003 Online Information conference. Runner up is Chris Launder, senior library assistant (reader services) at the Courtauld Institute of Art, who also received a free place at the Online Information conference.
Jointly promoted by Online Information and CILIP: the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals, the Award was open to anyone who gained their Chartership from CILIP, or equivalent qualifications from one of its predecessor bodies the Institute of Information Scientists or the Library Association, between October 2001 and September 2002.
"Chartership is so much more than just five letters after your name," said Jas in her winning entry. "It has brought value and pride to my job and professional outlook, which I believe can be measured." Chartership also makes you think more about your skill-set and how you fit into an organisation, she believes. "When you start to think more about your capabilities you learn how to make judgements on your own professional development."
To enter, candidates were asked to write a statement of no more than 500 words explaining why they felt Chartership was of value for personal professional development. The entries were assessed by a panel of judges including CILIP Chartership Board Chairman Chris West, Katherine Allen of Online Information, and Paul Pedley of the Economist Intelligence Unit.
"The competition attracted entrants from around the UK and from a wide range of library and information backgrounds," said CILIP's Head of Membership, Careers and Qualifications Marion Huckle. "I'm sure that winning will give Jas plenty of encouragement to maintain her personal career planning and development activities - and she is of course in an excellent position to tell others about the very tangible benefits of CPD!"
Runner up Chris Launder also sees Chartership as a very practical benefit. "Being Chartered ensures that you have a full, well structured and up to date CV," he said. "You will also have been examining many of the topics that will come up at interviews. You will find that you have already constructed answers to questions that frequently arise at both job interviews and staff appraisals."
"For some individuals, the value of Chartership is materially measured through promotions, salary increases and greater career opportunities," continues winner Jas Sembhi. But, she adds, whether or not your pay cheque increases, everyone who gains Chartership can share in the satisfaction of achieving a higher qualification. "And of course there's those five letters after your name - MCLIP."
