Thanks Tony - what B word is that?! I see New Street Station on a list of
Britain's most prominent places in my newspaper this morning...Just to
reassure everyone that there's no intention of raising the "let's move out
of London" issue again. As I said in my earlier posting it's about
devolution and about eCILIP. Bob.

At various times there have been proposals that the BMA save a lot of money
by moving out of London. Normally reliable sources indicate that these
havenormally been put forward by senior staff (especially the finance
officers) and been swiftly squished by the force of member opinion.
Certainly in its lobbying and opinion forming roles it would be impossible
to operate without at least a substantial London base with most of the
senior staff and chief officers on hand to participate; which in turn means
that everything else would be seriously marginalised and operational
managers such as myself would be forever schlepping down to HQ to make sure
we and our services were not forgotten - which rings a bell somewhere.
Also (and I've no idea about this since I work only 10 minutes' gentle
stroll away from Cilip Tower) members putting in time supporting their
professional association may feel less rewarded by the opportunity to
visit, well let's just say the viable alternative locations and not mention
the B word.
Large parts of enterprises simply couldn't be moved because you'd never get
the specialist staff and/or the market is essentially London-based.
Finally (and this apparently weighed with everyone concerned at the BMA)
moving your HQ London is a once-only, no-way-back decision for an
organisation like Cilip. You're in effect deciding to spend a slab of the
organisation's capital on relocating staff, paying off those who don't want
to go, replacing the key staff who wouldn't be bribed. We all know how
much it costs to curtain, carpet and furnish a new house, and an
organisatinal move is like that but in spades.
Far from making a case for changing places, the net is a strong argument
for staying in central London. If you can get to members' desks from
wherever you are, and you're already in a place with tons of advantages -
why vote for the hassle?

I'm interested in Linda's comment about CILIP being too London-based. The
draft Plan talks about devolving CILIP activities to the Home Nations and
the English Regions; and about the development of eCILIP to bring the
resources of CILIP onto Memebers' desktops irrespective of geography. What
do colleagues think about this issue? Bob.
