Matt,
Although we have offered support to researchers in the past (training in literature searching and any specialist subject support required etc) it has been a little ad hoc. We have tried to be inclusive and give all PhD students the opportunity to come to the Library for help and training. Some academic staff arrange sessions for groups of their students, particularly if they're on a programme such as PsychD.
We're in the process of reviewing our provision for researchers and finding ways in which we may improve our provision. It's early days yet, but the first step is the cheap option of providing web pages that are dedicated towards our researchers. It is in the process of being created so I can't give you a web address yet.
As we are now a Federal University we are investigating online retrieval skills training with our Federal partners at Roehampton.
It's clear that we need to improve what we do. It's also clear that some ideas require funding - the next step is to broach this one.

Subject: Supporting Ph.D. Researchers
Dear Colleagues,
Here at Bournemouth University there is a "strategic push" towards research
and Ph.D. registrations, as a result we are rethinking our service delivery
to our research community. One of the other things I did was to look to see
if there is any literature on the subject. Only two references so far! My
question is 1) Do colleagues support Doctoral researchers differently from
those on taught BA/MA's and how? 2) Is this an undiscovered area, has anyone
else had cause to look into it before?
The most helpful discussion I have found is Simpson, A.E.
