Dear Colleagues,
I may have overstated the case :-> I accept that Online Packages have a
place, however, its helpful to articulate the counter arguments. Ian makes a
good point that students are not always on Campus and in some environments
staffing structures, curricula design and numbers make face to face with all
students impossible - perhaps less in institutions like Bournemouth
University where we have a Subject Librarian structure.
I would make one distinction, however, between packages which purport to
teach and online communication with students. I , and I am sure colleagues,
enjoy a lively dialog with students on e-mail/mobile telephone etc. when
they are away on placement in the UK or abroad or International students who
have returned home to complete research. Part of that is to e-mail when
required prepared Word Documents or PowerPoint presentations to support
particular needs. Again I would argue that Web Tutorials are static in this
regard and that the true benefit of "communications technologies" is just
that, an ability to communicate in a fantastic variety of ways. Of course
this has to be engineered into the curriculum delivery and brings me back
again to the arguments about integration with the curriculum.
