There are, as Louise points out a considerable range of laudable skills
packages, however it is important to point out that skills packages are only
one part of a complex picture.
There many issues surrounding the use of these which need to be in place if
students are to develop effective skills in searching information resources.
Do we point students to the packages or do we embed them in their courses in
such a way that they are relevant and meaningful?

Subject: Web based information skills packages
In light of the recent discussion we thought some of you might be
interested in the following. As part of the work of the Big Blue project
we have come across some more examples of web based information skills
packages which may be of interest. These can be found on our website at
http://www.leeds.ac.uk/bigblue/onlineiscourses.html
Throughout the project we have been struck by the sheer number and variety
of packages that have been developed and the range of skills that they
encompass. One example of particular note is Pilot, devised by the
Queensland University of Technology, which can be found on the web page
noted above.
Other information relating to information skills can be found on our
website at
http://www.leeds.ac.uk/bigblue/
We are always on the look out for good quality examples - so of anyone has
come across an online package which they think meets that criteria please
let us have the link.
Many thanks
