Shortly after the LISE conference at the end of March I
sent out an e-mail concerning the future development of the
British Education Index. Since then I have received a
number of e-mails from LISE members, Phil Sheffield (BEI),
Alison McNab (JISC), Judy Reading (as ELG Chair) and
Michael Bassey (BERA).
My original intention was to ask LISE members to prioritise
the points listed below at this stage but it is clear that
we are all generally thinking along the same lines. The
biggest single issue is the question of service provider
(Phil has mentioned a version of OVID or the CSA interface
known to some of us through the British Humanities Index or
ASSIA as possibilities) as that will affect existing
user training and determine some system features. I know
some of you have already replied to Phil on this point.
If you feel strongly that a particular feature or facility
must be provided, please let me know over the next few days
as I have promised to reply to Alison McNab very shortly so
that discussions with service providers can be concluded in
time to provide a service from 1st August.
Best wishes,
Martin
-------------------------
In our discussions a number of matters were raised.
1. SERVICE ISSUES
Whatever follows from 1st August should:
a) be available online in multi-user format and
authenticated for off-campus use (ATHENS?)
b) Have adequate response times
c) Most members would prefer a 3 year licence option rather
than 5 or 1 year
d) Most members would need adequate time to consult with
fund-holders (sometimes from academic schools) before
committing to a decision - it would be difficult to achieve
this in a few days.
e) For some (but not all) members the networked CD-Rom
would be a back-up if access to the online version became
financially untenable (aware of the skewed effect of
dataset banding charges particularly for large
universities with small Schools of Education).
f)Regular updates (more regular than now!)
We also considered features which might form the basis of
developments. The following were raised - and I would be
interested in receiving any other ideas as soon as
possible.
2. DEVELOPMENTS
a)Full text links (might be achieved in a number of ways or
by linking back to the local catalogue/index)
b)British Education Thesis Index
c)Updated Thesaurus
d)Cross-database links (suggestions include
ERIC/ASSIA/PsycINFO/Child Data Abstracts/ERA/Soc Abs)
