Benefits of GALILEO to the UK
You are invited to attend a DTI and DTLR supported 1-day seminar/workshop
entitled "Benefits of Galileo to the UK".
The European Union is poised to make a decision regarding the future of
Galileo, Europe's Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). In March 2002,
at a meeting of its Transport Council, Europe's Transport Ministers will
decide whether to fund the next phase of work consisting of the development
and validation of the Galileo constellation.
In order to drive the decision-making process within the UK, the British
National Space Centre (BNSC) has commissioned Astrium UK to conduct a
UK-focussed study to determine:
* Why Galileo is required?
* What benefits Galileo will bring to UK users over GPS?
This is the first time this issue has been specifically addressed and the
study will compare the performance of GPS and Galileo against the
requirements of selected applications from all user communities.
It is essential that the output of this analysis is validated by potential
users of Galileo and you are invited to a 1-day workshop to share the
findings of the study. The objectives of the workshop are to:
* Discuss the ability of GPS and Galileo to meet requirements;
* Critically review the study findings on the positioning solutions
required to meet the requirements of different applications;
* Reach a consensus on the applications where Galileo will offer a
benefit to UK users.
The workshop will be held in central London on 26 February 2002. This
potentially represents the last opportunity to support the decision making
process within the UK and to understand where the real benefits of Galileo
when compared with GPS will be achieved.
Further details of the venue will follow. If you are interested in
attending, please complete the enclosed reply form by 11 February 2002. The
quality of the study is dependent upon obtaining good feedback from GNSS
users. If you are not able to attend yourself, please pass this invitation
on to colleagues. Alternatively, you can review the study findings and
provide us with feedback directly without attending the workshop (see
feedback form).
If you require more information on Galileo or have any questions about the
seminar, please contact Natalie Chapman on 01276 452811 or email
