This symposium is to address the Victorian notion that art was a civilizing
agency. You might consider education for women in the arts; home arts;
educating others; institutions like the Kyrle Society, the Home Arts and
Industries Association, the National Trust and the WI; Settlements like
Toynbee Hall; Collection forming and bequests; Ideology (Ruskin and
Morris).
