Only of possible interest to those of us operating Learndirect Centres ... &
with apologies if you have already come across something very similar on the
Lis-pub-libs list.
I'm passing this on because It would seem that there is something buried in
the small print of the UfI contract that might give cause for concern.
In a nutshell it boils down to what might happen if a UfI learner "damages"
the LearnDirect system either when operating out of a Centre, or from home,
presumably having registered as a learner at a centre in the first place.
Obviously, the explanatory text below relates to public library context ...
perhaps other centres need not be concerned if somehow they are coverd
against this sort of potential liability.
The scenario below is taken from a Local authority and relates directly to a
library-based LearnDirect Learning Centre, hence the specific wording in the
opinion from that authority's legal section ...
"In simple terms, if a library user either at home or in the
library somehow puts a virus into the Learndirect Learning Support
Environment which is not
detected by the anti virus software, then as things
presently stand UFI
will be able to the draw the "**********" (i.e.organisation
responsible for the Learning Centre) involved into any claim brought by a
third party ."
I have no idea of how much of a risk this might actually be.
