[Hi Fiona, many thanks for the comments, much appreciated. I have not sent
on the PDF since people start to ask if we have sent out a virus infected
file etc. If members do want a PDF version then please contact Fiona. Best
wishes, John.]

Subject: One week and one day
It's one week and one day since September 11, which seems an appropriate
time to send the attached conference announcement to you and through
you, to the other list members. Like so many others, I felt fairly
impotent after last year's attacks. When an announcement for a special
edition of the journal "Prometheus" called for papers on September 11, I
found a way I could at least feel as if I was doing *something* useful
- not much but something. That journal is now available but has spawned
a one day symposium to be held in New York next month, something else
for which I owe this list thanks. I've attached the announcement in
adobe format, but have reproduced it below for those who would prefer.
John and Joanne, thanks again for the work you put in to maintaining
this list - its makes a difference in so many ways
Fiona

Time: 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM; Registration: 8:30 AM

This conference focuses on the communication aspects of the tragedy of
September 11, 2001. In particular, the
conference is concerned with the social and societal effects of the
performance and use of telecommunication and the
mass media during and immediately after the tragedy. The conference
unites scholars and researchers internationally
who will summarize and discuss the results of their research from the
perspectives of their various multi disciplines.
The conference views communication broadly, integrating interpersonal
and mass media. Interpersonal
communication includes mediated voice and text telecommunication and
traditional face-to-face, and mass
communication includes broadcast radio and television, traditional print
media, and such new media as the Internet.
The knowledge and perspective of the social sciences should help guide
the development of communication systems
and technologies to satisfy real needs in times of emergency and
tragedy. Broader policy issues and lessons will be
presented and discussed at the conference.

Prometheus Journal:
In conjunction with this conference, a special issue of the journal has

the authors represented at the conference. Prometheus publishes high

issues in technological change, innovation,
information economics, and telecommunications and science policy. Copies
of the journal will be available at the
conference.
