Special Issue on Patterns for Universal Design, Access and Usability
Springer International Journal Universal Access in the Information Society
(UAIS)
http://link.springer.de/journals/uais/
In the user interface design community, there have been vigorous
discussions on usability patterns worldwide since 1997, and many patterns
languages and tools have been investigated for the development of
pattern-oriented design of a large variety of user interfaces. In the
context of universal access, patterns have the potential to be a
high-level tool for compiling experience gained through feedback from
users, as well as usability and software engineers. Patterns can also
facilitate the development and testing of user interfaces while improving
their universal access and usability. Furthermore, they are an ideal
vehicle for transferring usability knowledge to developers unfamiliar with
universal design, usability and accessibility techniques.
This special issue aims to initiate a scholarly discussion on how
usability patterns and pattern languages can contribute to universal
design theory and practices. Original research contributions are
solicited, focusing on pattern-oriented designs and pattern languages for
universal access. The thematic scope of the Special Issue includes:
- Patterns as a method for gathering and sharing universal user
experiences and best universal design practices
- Types of pattern languages appropriate for universal design, access and
usability
- Automation of pattern-oriented universal design
