SGI is a big endian machine and Alpha a little. However it is easy to to
read big endian files on the alpha with compaq fortran
1) compile with the "-convert big_endian" compile time option.
or
2) use "convert='BIG_ENDIAN'" on the file open statement.
Doing this you can just read the file as you wrote it.
