PIXEL RAIDERS
A one day symposium on commentary, criticism & practice
Applied artists and digital technologies
Crossing boundaries through object, body & language
Supported by the Arts Council of England
Sponsored by: Crafts Magazine, Metamute, Vicon
Tuesday 19th March 2002 10am - 5pm
Lecture Theatre, Victoria & Albert Museum,
Cromwell Rd, London, SW7.
Applied artists are using digital technologies for new processes,
virtual materials, exhibition, performance and creative strategies.
This challenges commentary & understanding about hybrid
practices that integrate physical and virtual making.
Pixel Raiders explores the issues, discourse and reflective
practice at the heart of digital making. Targeting commentators,
curators educators, practitioners & researchers. This one day
symposium will provide a forum for discussion & a dialogue with
some leading specialists in this field.
How does the artist & the critic communicate hybrid practices?
In what ways do new technologies enhance the collaborative
nature of practice, presentation & performance? How does
the digital workspace impact on practice? Should technology
and technique become invisible?
The 3D CG animation work of Dr Jane Harris, Research Fellow,
Central St Martins & Convenor, will represent a focus for
discussion. Chaired by Professor Mike Press , Sheffield Hallam
University, speakers include Tanya Harrod, writer, Christoph
Zellweger, jeweller, Dr Lizbeth Goodman, Smart Lab, Central
St Martins, Helen Sloan, curator at FACT (Foundation for Art
& Creative Technology) & Ann Marie Shillito Research Fellow,
Tacitus project, Edinburgh College of Art. A contributing panel
