Scott and Europe
The seventh meeting of the International Scott Conference
University of Konstanz/Germany, 22-26 July 2003
The seventh quadrennial meeting of the International Scott Conference
will take place on 22-26 July, 2003 at the University of
Konstanz/Germany. While the thematic focus, in keeping with the
location, will be on Scott and Europe, contributions are encouraged on
all aspects of and approaches to Scott’s life, works, sources,
reputation, and influence, as well as on other Scottish, Irish,
British regional and colonial writers of the period, and related
topics.
Proposals are invited for individual 20-minute papers, or for sessions
consisting of 3-4 papers addressing a particular topic. There are due
(1-page paper proposals, 3-page session proposals) by December 31,
2002 at the address below. In addition to formal papers, it is planned
to devote a number of sessions to round-table discussions of current
teaching, research, and general-interest issues in Scott criticism and
Scottish Studies.
Topics/sessions might include:
Literary diplomacy and (cultural, linguistic) translations: Scott’s
reception of European literature, and Scott’s reception in Europe;
Scott and European Romanticism.
Scott and nation(s): national identity and culture; the rise of
national literatures and nationalisms.
Romantic Geographies: home tours, grand tours, travel-writing, Scott
tourism.
Scott and the Arts/Music/Film.
Historiography/Historical Fiction: reconsiderations and revisions.
Scott’s contemporaries at home and abroad.
