Thank you very much to everyone who replied to my query about contracting out
services with regard to Best Value reviews. The opinion was that any
contracting out must meet all the requirements of BS5454 and any other relevant
standards, so in practice anything involving direct handling of material would
have to be done on the premises. The services which respondents have
contracted out are:
microfilm and microfiche processing and duplication (not camera work)
conventional photography
digitisation (on site)
some records management services - some storage and its associated retrieval
compiling publications
some conservation work
One respondent commented that in theory records management could be contracted
out, but in practice it is not advantageous either in terms of cost or
practicality.
There is a website about best value in archives: www.bestvalueforarchives.org.
