Dear all,
the Institute for Archaeo-Metallurgical Studies (IAMS) is planning to offer
a Summer School this May here in London. The idea is to offer one week on
ancient mining (13-17 May) and one week on smelting of metals (21-24 May),
with lectures mostly by Tim Shaw, HG Bachmann, Beno Rothenberg and Thilo
Rehren. On Monday 20 May we will have the one-day meeting / conference on
'Past societies and materials: archaeological information and written
sources', with a range of papers on metals, glass and other archaeological
materials. To allow wide attendance at that meeting, we will start the
second week of the Summer School only on Tuesday.
The two weeks are designed to be useful individually, i.e. the second week
does not require previous attendance of the first week.
We plan to ask for a cost contribution of between 50 and 100 pounds per week
per person, (depending on numbers and whether we include sandwich lunches),
to cover the immediate basic costs. In addition to this, participants would
have to arrange their own accomodation, breakfast and dinners.
Please express as soon as possible, but at the latest by the end of January
whether you (or someone you may know) are interested in participating.
Please send your reply to [log in to unmask], NOT to the entire list by
hitting the reply botton. At this stage, there will be no committment from
your side, but we need to know roughly how many people would like to attend
in order to finalise the programme.
Thilo Rehren
