Dear All
At Derby we are reconsidering the classification of certain programmes for Media and Sports. Back in 99 when these cost centres were introduced they did not meet the criteria set. However, following changes to the validation and content we now believe that they do meet the criteria.
After contacting HEFCE they told us that if we met the criteria we could change their Price Group banding and return them in HESES at the higher band. We did not need to gain approval but may be asked to justify large changes in Price Group splits.
They also said that we would not receive any additional funds if we remaining within the +/-5% tolerance band. They said that even if it moved us outside of this we would be unlikely to receive additional funds.

We at York St John approached the funding council about our Psychology
classification which as you perhaps know varies between price groups D and B
across the sector. The assignment to price group was based on an assessment
of each institution by the funding council a number of years ago. Since
investing in the provision further we felt that there was a case for
receiving a percentage of price group B funding (currently it is all D). The
funding council however were unwilling to consider this proposal. The best
that they could offer was that if we decided to bid for ASNs in Psychology
we could possibly ask for them in B and not D.

Liz,
I've no direct experience - but if the intention is to get additional
HEFCE funding, I wouldn't hold out too much hope. This follows from our
experience at King's when in successive years German and Spanish,
followed by French, were reclassified by HEFCE as being in price group C
rather than D. As we were still within the plus or minus 5% of standard
resource allowed for Teaching, no funding adjustment was forthcoming.
Best wishes,
Brian
