Without wishing to turn into Jacob Nielson here's a fine example of a website shooting itself in the foot....
We are Publicising National Science Week events on our homepage. This links to a page with details of what National Science Week is and a
few of the events Sheffield Hallam are hosting and provides a link to the 'search for an event' facility on the British Association for the
Advancement of Science website.
Unfortunately their site does not allow deep linking and forces users back to their homepage (where the banner advertising National Science
Week appears below the fold on an 800x600 screen resolution - there are no links to it above the fold). I contacted their webmaster and was
told that this was "to prevent outside users linking to the BA site in an inappropriate way".
An alternative URL was provided but not directly to the search facility - instead to a page outlining what National Science Week was
(something we have already done on our own site) and with a less-than-obvious link to the event listings.
I wondered if this would affect their search engine listings. When searching on Google for "National Science Week" their website comes up
top of the list, but I don't think anyone is going to click on it....

Needless to say I am updating our page to list just the events happening at the University!
