You read my mind. For all of me, Gioia is a total prat.
But, really, the Gioia/Causley/Auden lashup is really odd.
Decoding (and naturally, Dana G., pratlike, fails to give decent references)
I'd guess Causley gets it from Auden's _Light Verse_, crossed with "As I
walked out ..."
Assuming the lines Gioia quotes are from Causley rather than a draft of "As
I walked out one morning" ...
But who the hell knows? Gioia doesn't give any dates.
It's not that I'm particularly hyper on academe, but occasionally, a focused
sourcing would help.
