Hi Poetryetc,
This is mainly for Sydney-based people, a public art project in Parramatta over
the Anzac Day 'weekend' organised by the tireless Les Wicks. Others may be
interested in the concept. I'm going to the launch tomorrow night so I'll
report back on how it goes. Needless to say, the following is a press release.
Poetry on the water under Lennox Bridge – Light, Sound and Words Show
Event date: 24 April 2002 - 28 April 2002
Location: Lennox Bridge, Church Street Parramatta.
Time: Each day between 6.30pm at 10.30pm
The words of a poem will flow on the surface of the river in a sound and light
show during the upcoming Heritage Festival.
"Sense" by Alan Jefferies will be scrolled line by line as if the poetry is
flowing downstream from the Lennox Bridge. Poems and prose by Australian poets
and writers including Jennifer Maiden, joanne burns, Jill Jones and Pam Brown
will be featured along the riverside.
Curator Les Wicks, who grew up in Parramatta, says he believes the idea of
projecting a poem onto the water may be a world first.
The event is designed so that the public will have to move across the bridge
and onto the riverbank in order to appreciate the display.
Six two metre high panels will display original pieces of prose, stories,
photos and historical facts about Parramatta and the River.
The lighting event is part of Council's Safe Art Project, which is designed to
encourage the public to reclaim public spaces in Parramatta with twilight
picnics on the riverbank or a stroll on the bridge after the theatre or dining
in town.
