Applications are invited for one or two Research Studentships in the
general area of Science and Technology Studies, to work under the
supervision of Professor Steve Woolgar at the Saïd Business
School, University of Oxford. The studentships are tenable from 1st
October 2002 for a period of three years.
Applicants will have experience and/or interests in any area of the
social dimensions of science and technology. The Saïd Business
School includes major research interests in this area such as
social impact of new electronic technologies, public understanding
of science, science communication, science enterprise,
technology related change in Universities, interactive social
science, implications of science studies for social theory. It is
home to the ESRC Virtual Society? programme
(www.virtualsociety.org.uk) and since 1st January 2002 to
the new ESRC Science in Society programme (www.sci-
soc.org.uk).
The studentships are to the value of full time home/EU (or overseas)
fees plus a stipend towards living costs. Successful applicants will
normally already have some research training (to Masters level) and
will register for a DPhil degree. Exceptionally, students will be
admitted to the MSc in the first instance. Applicants are asked to
state how their proposed research will contribute to research in the
field of Science and Technology Studies. The studentships include
opportunities for some teaching and research assistance.
