A one-day workshop will be held in the Department of Civil and
Structural Engineering at Sheffield University on Tuesday June 11th
from 11.0am to 4pm. The title is 'Some Recent Developments and
Research concerning In Situ Testing'.
The aim of this seminar is to disseminate the results of recent
research and development in the UK with regard to in situ testing, some
of it commercial and some academic. The coverage will be selective,
with the emphasis on cone penetration testing and permeability
measurement. Paul Jacobs (Fugro Ltd) will describe the in situ use of
chemical analysis sensors in cone penetrometers (geo-environmental
CPTs). These sensors can detect a wide range of contaminants including
petrol, diesel, chlorinated solvents, landfill leachate and
radio-active nuclides. Clive Dalton and Robert Whittle (Cambridge In
Situ) will describe the adaptation of the self boring pressuremeter for
in situ permeability measurement. Experience of applications in both
soft and stiff clays, and also in slurry walls, will be reviewed.
Charles Hird and Gilliane Sills will describe an EPSRC sponsored
investigation of piezocone performance in layered soils, with aspects
of permeable layer detection in clays and determination of the
coefficient of consolidation. The seminar has been planned
primarily for the benefit of geotechnical engineers working in
industry. However, academics and researchers will also be welcome. A
charge of £35 (cheques payable to "The University of Sheffield") will
be made for attendance and a buffet lunch. If you would like to attend,
please confirm by e-mail to Dr Charles Hird at [log in to unmask],
and provide also a full postal address, telephone number and fax number.
