Managed Learning Environments with Blackboard
09:30 - 16:30 Wednesday 13th March 2002
At Netskills, Newcastle upon Tyne
As learning and teaching material on the internet becomes more
sophisticated and students expectations about the use of new technology
grow, both on campus and through distance learning, many educational
organisations are turning to Managed (or Virtual) Learning Environments
such as Blackboard. These web-based environments offer not only facilities
to structure learning content, but also provide student management,
communication and assessment tools, and a range of other useful functions.
This is a practical workshop aimed at lecturers or support staff who wish
to learn about how the Blackboard 5 (Level One) managed learning
environment can be used to support various aspects of learning and
teaching.
Workshop Content:
The workshop will comprise presentations, demonstrations and hands-on
sessions with opportunities for questions and discussion. Participants will
each receive a workbook which contains workshop exercises, presentation
slides and other relevant materials.
Topics covered will include:
An overview of the Blackboard interface and navigation features
Customising the appearance and functionality of a course web site
Methods of creating content
Course support tools used for communication, collaboration and scheduling
Creating online assessments
Marking/grading
Student management facilities
By the end of the workshop participants will have:
Created their own Blackboard course web site
Applied their own look and feel to a course
Added content such as course and staff information, lecture notes and
external links
Explored how existing materials can be included in a Blackboard course,
including Word, PowerPoint and HTML files
Used the built-in course support tools provided by Blackboard, including
Calendar, Tasks and Discussion facilities
Customised the functionality of individual tools
Created an online quiz and explored marking and feedback functions
Investigated facilities for student management and progress tracking
Workshop Requirements
Participants should be familiar with the use of a computer keyboard and
mouse, Microsoft Windows based products and the use of a web browser such
as Netscape or Internet Explorer. Experience of file management using
Windows Explorer is also useful. No knowledge of HTML or other web
technologies is assumed, although participants who have some basic
experience in creating web pages will find it useful.
The cost of the workshop is 120 pounds for participants from UK higher and
further education. Other participants should contact Netskills for the
relevant fees. Note: Costs include lunch, morning coffee and afternoon tea.
Joining details and further information will be sent to participants prior
to the workshop.
Kind Regards
