I am a Romanian national studying for a PhD in Canterbury. My focus in on a
selected number of urban areas in Romania since 1989. My geenral idea si
that there was no question of evolution or replacement in romania in terms
of modes of rpoduction , teh capitalist sytem did not simply repalce teh
socialist one. Insetad we have a symbiosis between teh two with significant
imapcts on the romanian urban areas. It seems to me that both socialism and
the transition theories to capitalism post 1989 have acted in a spatial
voi, part of my interest is to idenify in the field the spatial variation
and distribution of the locations of economci functions. Using these my aim
is to suggest that there is a new urban form dveloping in romania in
particular and eastern europe in general - a hybrid city with pre-
socialist, socialist and post-socialist characteristics. Further more an
indication of why has this occurred is important.
Part of Romania's problem at the moment is that it has not been able to to
develo pa coherent recovery plan, it almost seems that it rties to do too
much too soon. There is a poor knowldge of the resources at hand, this
certainly seems to lead to a poor use of these resources.
These comments are indeed too general bu tas a romanian i appreciate my
country's adaptability and inventiveness and through my work i would like
to think i can help
I would appreciate anybody's comments - especially critical and negative
about any of these issues.
