Hi everyone,
Merry Christmas.
I have been reading about extended scope practitioners (ESP's) in the UK
and wonder if there are similar roles in other countries, and if so,
what has been the negative and positive impact on the physiotherapy
profession, medical profession, patients etc.
In the UK, ESP's are defined as a “Clinical physiotherapy specialists
with an extended scope of practice, who see patients referred for
assessment, clinical diagnosis and management” (CSP, 2000). An ESP
works outwith the traditional scope of physiotherapy i.e. they might
request and use the results of investigations (i.e. x-rays, blood tests)
to assist in the clinical diagnosis and management of patients, or refer
patients for surgery or to other medical/health care professionals. In
other words, the ESP is taking on roles and tasks that would normally be
carried out by medical colleagues.
Thanks,
Cathy
