medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Re Justinian: I think this may be the Breton/Welsh Justinian, who lived on
Ramsey Island off the coast of Pembrokeshire. He was indeed killed by his
followers when he asked them to work harder. Nothing daunted, he walked
across the sea carrying his head until he arrived at St Justinian's Point
(on the coast near St David's) where he asked to be buried. The little
chapel there is dedicated to him and his relics were eventually taken to
the cathedral - whence they were removed by the Protestant Bishop William
Barlow in the 1530s. Bones found in the cathedral recently were thought for
a time to be those of St David and St Justinian but have now been given a
much later radiocarbon date.
