ReGEA-2002
REPRESENTATIONS FOR GENETIC AND EVOLUTIONARY ALGORITHMS
Bird-of-a-feather Workshop
at the
Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference 2002
(GECCO-2002)
July 9-13, 2002 (Tuesday - Saturday)
New York City, New York, USA
to be held on Tuesday, July 9, 2002
WORKSHOP SUMMARY
For successful and efficient use of genetic and evolutionary algorithms
(GEAs), it is not enough to simply use efficient genetic operators, but
one must also find a proper representation for the problem. The
representation must at least be able to encode all possible solutions of
an optimization problem, and genetic operators such as crossover and
mutation should be applicable to it. However, even though it is well
known that the choice of proper representations is crucial for the
success of GEAs, there is still no common knowledge regarding the
properties high-quality representations should have and how
representations exactly affect the performance of GEAs. The purpose of
the workshop is to discuss the influence of representations on the
performance of genetic and evolutionary algorithms. It will focus on
theoretical properties of representations as well as on empirical
investigations into performance characteristics.
The workshop invites discussion on general issues in this area,
including (but not limited to):
- various existing representations
- theoretical properties and empirical performance characteristics
of representations
- explanations for performance differences of genetic algorithms
using different types of representations (redundancy, locality,
scaling of alleles, etc.)
- representations for real-world problems
- promising directions of future research
The workshop will be focused on representations in general, but it
welcomes interesting contributions to encoding issues that are
meaningful for network representations. Therefore, it continous
the workshop on representations and operators for network problems
(ROPNET 2001) at last years GECCO2001.
PARTICIPATION
Presentations will be selected according to the submitted 8-page
papers which will be reviewed by at least two members of the
international program committee. Accepted papers will be available
in electronic form before the workshop. Abbreviated versions of
the papers will be later published in the workshop proceedings.
The length of each paper will be determined by the number of
accepted papers.
For more detailed submission guidelines and recent updates,
see the workshop pages at

IMPORTANT DATES (subject to change)
Paper submission deadline: February 15, 2002
Decisions will be mailed by: March 15, 2002
Submissions of camera-ready papers: April 19, 2002

ATTENDANCE
Attendance to the workshop is open to all GECCO attendees.
Further information will be posted on the workshop web pages
( http://btw6x2.oec.uni-bayreuth.de/geccoworkshop2002/ )
as soon as it becomes available.
We are looking forward to your participation at the first
workshop ReGEA-2002 which is a great opportunity to meet and
discuss the covered topics for researchers in this area of
research as well as the ones who would like to learn more
about representations and networks.
