The Salvation Army which operates in 107 countries around the world is
currently engaged in a unique experiment. A world summit on "poverty" had
been planned to take place in Bangladesh this year. However, logistical
problems meant that the cionference had to be postponed. However, the
Salvation Army's international leader, General John Gowans believed that the
conference was too important to abandon and questionned the morality of
spending the huge amount of money necessary for an international conference
when the topic was "poverty". He therefore arranged that the conference
should go ahead, but on the world wide web and so currently running is a
virtual conference with contributions from around the world, free and open
to all.
