Dear all
New and former chairs of DCMI Multiple Languages Special Interest Group
prepare the following update, which we want to be placed on the DCMI
server http://www.dublincore.org/groups/languages/
We'll be very pleased for any comments of the proposed charter.
New name of IG:
DCMI Localization and Internationalization Special Interest Group
Background:
Dublin Core is increasingly being adopted outside an
English-speaking, generically bibliographical environment. It has long
been recognized that local knowledge from a diversity of cultural
contexts is useful not just locally, but also for the global
community. Since its beginning in 1997, the Dublin Core in Multiple
Languages group has recognized the need for a forum for exchanging such
knowledge and experience among the global community.
Mission:
The group is a forum for individuals and organizations from
international communities to share information and knowledge
gained from experiences in their local or domain-specific applications
of Dublin Core with global community, and to exchange ideas on
adapting Dublin Core to the local or domain-specific applications.
Scope:
This Interest Group is formerly DC Multiple Languages Interest
Group. Any issues originated from or related to adoption of DC to
language or culture specific issues are within the scope for discussion
in this group. A typical example is adoption of DC to local resources in
a local language, which may include definition of elements and
qualifiers to express language or culture specific information.
Topics of interest:
- approval process of non-English vocabularies,
- maintenance of element/qualifier definitions in various languages,
- multilingual metadata description,
- encoding of multilingual metadata descriptions,
- cross-/multi-lingual interoperability of metadata,
- community model for developing culture- and domain-specific
elements/qualifiers,
- translation and versioning,
- reuse of metadata schemas and profiles in global community,
- interoperability of metadata in global community,
- building international forum to exchange information and ideas.
