medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (1. December) is the feast day of:
Natalia of Nicomedia (d. c. 311) According to legend, Natalia was the wife
of Hadrian, who was martyred in c. 300. Natalia cared for imprisoned
Christians in Nicomedia, and later moved (with Hadrian's remains) to
Byzantium. She lived there beside his tomb, and died peacefully in c. 311.
Evasius (d. 362 (?)) Evasius was the first bishop of Asti (Italy) in the
mid-fourth century. He was driven out by the Arians, however, and legend
reports that he was finally martyred at the order of Julian the Apostate.
Leontius of Frejus (d. 432) Leontius became bishop of Frejus (southern
France) in 419. With Honoratus, he was co-founder of the monastery of
Lerins.
Eligius (Eloi) of Noyon (d. 660) Eligius was a goldsmith at the court of
the Frankish kings Chlothar II and Dagobert. Besides pursuing his trade,
he became a royal advisor, freed slaves, founded churches and monasteries,
etc. In 639 Eligius became a priest, and in 641 he was consecrated as
bishop of Noyon, where he was active in evangelizing Flanders. His cult
spread throughout western Europe from an early period.
Antonio Bonfadini (blessed) (d. 1482) Antonio was born in Ferrara in c.
1417, and in 1439 entered the Franciscan order. He was active for the rest
of his life as a missionary and preacher. He was beatified in 1901.
