Without a mapped boundary the potential for Learned Persons to dispute about
what constitutes any area, scheduled or otherwise, appears to be even
greater than that for disagreement about angels on pinheads.....

Surely a scheduled monument isn't actually legally defined by a line at all?
I know that HS, EH, Cadw are now defining them on maps for clarification but
I can recall plenty of monuments whose scheduling maps simply had the name
underlined on the map and no boundary shown...
No doubt whatever the thickness of a line a determined barrister would find
some way of arguing about the definition of the site...

Is this a legal definition or an EH working definition/standard, and is it
published anywhere?
I have experienced barristers at Planning appeals and Public Inquiries
arguing about the thickness and precise meaning of a line on a map....
I have not yet had to fight over an archaeological line, but I would like to
know if there is a legal basis for interpreting one

Just as a point of fact: the thickness of the 'red line' is immaterial. It
is the inside of the line that defines the monument, thus whatever the
thickness, the monument is whatever is in the inside edge of the line.
