4th GERMAN FILM FESTIVAL IN LONDON
Organised by the Export-Union of German Cinema in association
with the Goethe-Institut London
Friday 30 November - Thursday 6 December 2001
at Curzon Soho, Shaftesbury Avenue, London W1, Box Office: 020-
7734 2255
This year the selection of features by both established directors
and bright new talents ranges from the hilariously funny to the
bittersweet. The Festival gets under way with this year’s Opening
Film THE STATE I AM IN, directed by Christian Petzold, an original
coming of age story combined with an edgy thriller - and one of the
most powerful and controversial German films of recent years.
Director Thomas Arslan presents the final part of his acclaimed
Berlin trilogy (Dealer; Brothers and Sisters) A FINE DAY which
centres on the kind of woman you rarely find in films: one who has
absolutely no interest in conforming to stereotypes but wants to
find her own way. Esther Gronenborn’s feature film debut
ALASKA.DE is a chilling but sensitive exploration of a young
person’s world, in which brutality and recklessness co-exist with
moments of humour, warmth and attempted communication.
BERLIN IS IN GERMANY is Hannes Stöhr’s story of a man who
experienced Germany’s transition from his prison cell and returns
to a “New Berlin”; while Dennis Gansel’s fast-paced and cheeky
debut feature GIRLS ON TOP shows much naughtiness and a
strong sense of the hormonal worries and confusions of adolescent
girls. Michael Klier’s HEIDI M. is an extraordinary portrait of a
woman, devoid of sentimentality and cliché. When Heidi, who has
been without a partner since her divorce, is unexpectedly
confronted with romantic love, she decides to take the first hesitant
steps towards giving her life a new direction. SUMO BRUNO, the
wonderfully charming and quirky debut of Lenard Fritz Krawinkel,
follows a reluctant Bruno struggling to reach fitness to take part in
the Amateur Sumo Wrestling Championships, at the same time
trying to overcome his shyness in matters of the heart. THE
EXPERIMENT, Oliver Hirschbiegel’s feature film debut, is not for
the faint-hearted. The film follows a group of volunteers for a
psychological experiment which turns into a matter of life or
death... The Closing Film is Achim von Borries’ ENGLAND! - a
picture with a soul in which Russian soldier Valeri Sikorski goes in
search of his long-lost friend to fulfil their joint dream of going to
England, a shared promise of their youth.
This year’s FAMILY MATINEE is EMIL & THE DETECTIVES.
Director Franziska Buch based the film on the children’s novel of
the same title, written in 1928 by Erich Kästner.
Many of our filmmakers and actors will be in London to meet you,
the audience, and talk about their films. We hope you will enjoy the
programme and join us at the Curzon Soho.
