Dear All,

As predicted last time, I haven't had much time to add a lot to my site this
week and no time to add a newsletter.

I'm in Almaty, Kazakhstan which is where I spent five years from 1993 - 98;
so I've been meeting lots of old lags and so on and catching up on things in
addition to the work I've been doing.

Anyway, for anyone who reads my book reviews, I've just completed a review
of The Henry Root Letters: a book I read a long time ago and refound on my
bookshelf here. I was shocked to learn that I hadn't reviewed it, so I
quickly reread it and here you are. Not a lot of accounting and business
studies, I'm afraid; but a ripping good read providing you have a peculiarly

In my feedback section, however, I've added a page concerning a question
from a Bachelor of Commerce student. I didn't feel it right to give the full
answer to the question I was asked so you'll see a few pointers. The
question was "Discuss financial accounting conventions as filters in
selecting, processing and communicating decision relevant information." Go

If your eyesight's good, you might notice a new graphic of mine appearing
next to the address bar ... anyone wanting to learn how I did that, just
ask: it's relatively trivial but it could have marketing implications for
sites such as tutor2u and osl for example. I haven't checked whether these
two sites use their own graphics and mention them since I remember them!

If anyone is programming in html and is frustrated by constructing tables, I
worked out a spiffing ruse ... how to construct tables with almost no
bother. I'll write it all up when I get back to Tbilisi, but can give the
bare bones of an outline for anyone who's interest. As a taster, I recently
prepared a table that was four columns wide and more than 90 rows deep: I
constructed it within two minutes. If you HTML editor has a full Tables
routine you won't need my method but if you're using something like
Arachnophilia or 1st Page 2000, I KNOW you need help ... unless you've
arrived at the same solution as me, that is!!

Finally, I've started penning a travelogue of this trip and will post that
once I get back to Tbilisi: for development economists, I will try to
include a few indicators of the changes I've found here since the last time
I was here: changes relating to accounting reform, the implementation of
ISO9000, developments in company finance and the number of mobile phones in
circulation. In addition, there are other indicators such as how drivers now
stop at Zebra crossings, the number of retail outlets and their size and
style ...
