See Dan Healey's article in Slavic Review, summer 2001,233-65, and
translation of Igor Kon on the Sexual Revolution in Russia.

Note from A. Jameson:
I have found the following title very interesting on this topic:
I. S. Kon, Seksual'naya Kul'tura v Rossii, O.G.I., Moscow, 1997.
I bought it recently from Panorama of Russia <[log in to unmask]>

Further to Jay Alexander's note about Dan Healey's article, I believe
his book is either on the market or due out soon with University of
Chicago. Perhaps he is lurking somewhere on the list and might
provide additional details.
Best,

One efficient place to start is the R. W. Connell, _Masculinities_,
Cambridge, England: Polity Press, 1995. See his chapter 8, "The History of
masculinity" and the rest of the book is sociological but v. useful, too.
David D. Gilmore, _Manhood in the Making: Cultural Concepts in the Making_
(New Haven, 1996) is useful as well, from a more anthropological perspective.
For Russia, watch out for the following which will be published in January
2002:
Barbara Evans Clements, Rebecca Friedman, Dan Healey, ed. _Russian
Masculinities in History and Culture_ London/NY: Palgrave [formerly
Macmillan/St Martins Press]. Contains historical essays on Imperial and
Soviet masculinities including ones by Catriona Kelly, Karen Petrone, and
Thomas Schrand which would be directly relevant to your undergrad's
interests.
