Fashion and the Applied Arts
Courtauld Institute of Art, Friday 26 July - Saturday 27 July 2002
The conference will explore the relationship between Fashion and the
Applied Arts, past and present. Papers should draw on the whole history
of dress and a broad interpretation of the applied arts, which could

theme in the context of both Western and non-Western cultures. Topics of
interest include:
- The role of architecture in fashion retailing and promotion
- The 'lifestyling' of fashion and the fashionable lifestyle
- The role of fashion within applied art movements (e.g. Arts & Crafts,
Bauhaus, Omega)
- Interpreting, curating and displaying fashion and the aplied arts
- The role and use of ornament in fashion and the applied arts
- The influence of clothes, fashions and rituals of dressing on
furniture and interior design
- The applied arts as sources for the history of fashionable dress
Papers are invited from research students, academics, curators,
practitioners, and members of industry and commerce. Papers should be of
30 minutes duration.
