The Tudor and Stuart Interior
Two study days organised as part of the British Galleries 1500-1900 events
programme
Lecture Theatre, Victoria and Albert Museum
Friday 22 February 2002, 10.30 - 17.00
Saturday 23 February 2002, 10.30 - 17.00
The study days offer new approaches to familiar and less well-known
pieces, plus discussion on wider issues surrounding the Tudor and Stuart
interior.
The era saw the introduction of new techniques of construction and
decoration of rooms and furnishings, and firmly established the idea of
the interior as a whole through complementary colours, materials and
designs. The number and appearance of rooms dedicated to private life,
communal life and religious devotion developed enormously. Luxury objects
enriched the domestic environment, expressing dignity and status through
fashionable styles, while practical objects served daily household needs.
Speakers will also consider how subsequent centuries have interpreted
these domestic spaces, and how the conservation to which the V&A is
dedicated both preserves the past and re-evaluates it for modern
audiences.
Speakers: Maurice Howard, David Gaimster, Claire Gapper, Annabel Westman,
Annabel Ricketts, Tara Hamling, Simon Thurley, Anna Keay, Tessa Murdoch,
Anthony Wells-Cole, Ian Gow, Anne Laurence, Sara Pennell, Nick Humphrey.
