UMIST
DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTATION
LECTURERS IN COMPUTING
UMIST is a centre of excellence in engineering, science, technology, and
management. The Department of Computation has an established international
teaching and research reputation with strong industrial links. The
Department's graduates are highly rated by employers and the appointees will
be required to play a full role in the research, teaching and administrative
activities of the Department. The Department is seeking to expand by making
appointments in the following research areas:
o Data and Decision Engineering
Research enhances enterprise competitveness and tactical decision making by
using data, and by deriving higher-order knowledge from large complex data
streams.
o Emergent Information Systems
Research focuses on processes and architectures for designing software
systems that evolve and adapt to rapidly changing business and social needs
Research focuses on human computer interaction and the design of e-commerce
systems.
o Intelligent and Reactive Systems
Research focuses on systems that respond to their environments in flexible
'intelligent' ways, including assistive devices for disabled people.
One or two of the lectureships in Interactive Systems Design will join the
team in the Centre for HCI Design.

Centre for HCI Design
The Centre which moved from City University in January 2000, and currently
has five staff, Professor Alistair Sutcliffe, Drs Leon Watts, Jock
McNaught, Bill Black and Sri Kurniawan, 7 research staff plus several post
graduate students. We are seeking to expand our activity in Human Computer
Interaction and Requirements/Systems Engineering. The Centre focuses on
HCI-in-the-large, (user centred design of socio-technical systems) as well
as HCI-in-the-small (design of interactive artefacts). Our research has a
strong commitment to theory, in the context of developing practical methods,
techniques and tools. Research falls into two broad areas.
* Cognitive engineering and interactive system design, applied to
interactive technologies (virtual reality, multimodality, multimedia,
collaborative and ubiquitous computing) across a range of application areas
(information retrieval, safety critical systems, assistive technology and
eCommerce).
* Systems and Requirements engineering-, socio technical systems design,
human factors in systems engineering, requirements acquisition, modelling
complex socio technical system, collaboration in the systems engineering
process, methods and tools for scenario based RE, theories of domain
knowledge and reuse
We are looking for researchers who wish to join an expanding team with
interests in the above areas, however we also encourage applications from
researchers with interests in any area of HCI or requirements/system
engineering.
