Workplace Basic Skills Network 4th Annual Residential Conference and AGM 29/30
November, Newport, Gwent, Wales (just off the M4, 40 minutes from Bristol)

Workplace Basic Skills: Future Directions

This conference is being held at the Hilton Hotel, Newport in Wales on the 29th
& 30th November, focussing on the 'Future Directions of Workplace Basic
Skills'. There will be a discussion on future alternative policies, alternative
ways of working with companies, new technologies and new partnerships. There
will be a chance for delegates to talk about current practice, but also to set
out the vision for where practitioners want workplace language, literacy and
numeracy provision to be in five years time.

Speakers include Eoin McClennan-Murray, Head of Employer Initiatives at the
Adult Basic Skills Strategy Unit, DfES on 'the future of workplace basic skills
in England', Miriam Griffiths from Education Learning Wales, Marge Ben Tovim
from the Basic Skills Agency on the Welsh Adult Basic Skills Strategy, Judith
Swift from the TUC, and Phil Price from FENTO.

There will be feedback on the Network's survey of UK workplace language,
literacy and numeracy provision with a focus on barriers to ESOL provision, and
workshops run by providers on good practice around the UK on various topics
including:

Partnership with unions,
Work in the Hospitality sector, with bakery staff, and with SMEs, Integrating
NVQs and basic skills,
ESOL in the workplace,
using ICT with hospital porters, and for assessment
developing basic skills to enhance promotion  prospects in the Motor industry,
and
a pre-redundancy package in the Dairy industry.

In addition there will be a session on Workplace Basic Skills in Jamaica,
taster sessions from the Network's 'Breaking Down Barriers 1' and 'Using the
Internet' course and a chance to develop thinking about 'doing research in
workplace basic skills'.
