Based Systems and Applied Artificial Intelligence
Peterhouse College, Cambridge, England, December 10th-12th 2001
Organised by SGES: The British Computer Society Specialist Group on
Knowledge-Based Systems and Applied Artificial Intelligence

The conference programme and registration form are now available on
the conference website at http://www.bcs-sges.org/es2001/. A summary
of the main features is given below.
The deadline for receipt of registration forms at the early
registration discounted rate has just passed, but they will still be
accepted for the next few days. There are also discounts for members
of SGES, NCAF and any other AI society that is a member of ECCAI and
for students. Special bursaries/travel grants are also available to
enable full-time research students to attend the tutorials on

the following two days. SGES are also subsidising a reduced rate for
non-presenting students. As well as the sixth UK CBR Workshop (a full
day event) there will be half-day Tutorials entitled
- Artificial Immune Systems: an Introduction
- Implementing Rational decision-Making in Agent Based Systems
- How to build a practical neural network
- Applications of Model-based Reasoning
TWO-DAY CONFERENCE:
TUESDAY DECEMBER 11TH - WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 12TH 2001
The conference will run two parallel streams.
The Applications Stream will present refereed papers describing
practical applications of AI, highlighting critical areas of success
(and failure) and presenting lessons of value to other developers,
together with an invited keynote lecture by Rudolph Burger (Chief
Executive Officer, Media Lab Europe) entitled 'Innovative Applications
of Technology in the new Millennium'.
The Technical Stream will present refereed papers on important recent
technical developments, together with an invited keynote lecture by
Prof. Derek Sleeman (University of Aberdeen) entitled 'Knowledge
Technologies: a ReUse Perspective'.
The papers in both streams have been rigorously refereed. Accepted
papers from the two streams will be published by Springer-Verlag as
separate volumes in its BCS Conference Series, entitled Research and
Development in Intelligent Systems XVIII and Applications and
Innovations in Intelligent Systems IX. The best papers from each
stream of the conference will be reprinted as a special issue of the
